The fall of tobacco industry in the West, especially in The United States of America, has led the companies to focus their markets on developing countries like Indonesia. Massive advertisement all over the country, as it has always been their technique, has created the perception that smoking is cool, fun, and sexy. They also use some narratives that encourage the young on their ads. All those concerning phenomenon has awaken some people of Indonesia to fight for the regulation of tobacco industry in the country. Will the tobacco control activists win against the companies?
While Indonesia is flooded with cigarette ads, the USA has banned all kind of things since 1971. The regulation there has getting stricter ever since. Nicotine has settled to be addictive substances in the 90’s, and the tax for tobacco products keeps rising. Meanwhile, Indonesia has just classified nicotine to be addictive substances in 2012, and the cigarette price is still quite affordable until today. One of the Indonesian parliaments in 2011 explained that strict regulation of tobacco will harm the nation economy due to massive employment by the industry and big taxes they pay. Although the government well understood the consequences their facing, like health problem and poverty, it is still hard for them to make such big decision.
