Tentang Elizabeth Rachel
My journey with the cello began in the classical world, where I built a strong foundation in technique, sound, and musical discipline.
Over time, my curiosity led me beyond traditional classical repertoire and into jazz and improvisation, allowing the cello to become a more flexible, expressive voice.
Studying in New York City deeply shaped both my playing and my musical perspective. Being immersed in a city full of classical concerts, jazz clubs, and cross-genre collaborations helped refine my technique and tone, while also widening my musical palette.
It changed how I listen, phrase, and connect with sound.
During my studies, I also took an introductory music therapy course, which influenced the way I approach teaching. Through this experience, I learned how music can meet people where they are—emotionally, cognitively, and musically. It reinforced my belief that lessons should be personalized, responsive, and shaped around each student’s needs, goals, and learning pace.
Exploring both classical and jazz cello, alongside a music therapy perspective, taught me that structure and freedom can coexist. This balance guides how I play and how I teach: building solid foundations while creating space for expression, curiosity, and growth.
As a musician and teacher, I bring this approach into every lesson—helping students not only learn the cello, but also develop confidence, awareness, and their own musical voice.

I started learning the cello at SMK Musik Perguruan Cikini, where I received a strong classical foundation and learned the importance of discipline, listening, and persistence in daily practice.
That early training shaped my relationship with the cello—not just as an instrument, but as a lifelong companion.
My journey later brought me to Columbia University, New York, where I continued to grow as a musician and educator. Studying there helped me see music learning from a wider perspective: that progress doesn’t come from pressure alone, but from understanding how each person learns, feels, and expresses themselves through sound.
Because of this, I believe learning the cello is a balance between persistence and creativity. Technique matters, but so does curiosity, imagination, and enjoying the process.
In my lessons, I draw from different approaches such as Suzuki (building strong foundations and learning by listening), Dalcroze (connecting music with movement and bodily awareness), and my own personalized approach, adapted to each student’s pace, needs, and goals. Some students move quickly, others need more time—and both are completely okay.
My goal is to help students:
Develop healthy technique and a beautiful sound
Build confidence and consistency over time
Stay curious and expressive with the cello
Feel supported, not rushed
