Tentang Sherin
I’m ABRSM 8 trained (currently finishing my exam), with 1 year of teaching experience mentored by a senior teacher with +15 years of experience, successfully educating hundreds of kids through ABRSM distinctions (from grade 1-8). I, myself, have brought children into distinction in only my 1st year of teaching. I plan to pursue ARSM (diploma ABRSM) as soon as my exam is finished, routinely undertaking masterclasses with the honourable Prof. Wilson Chu, unlocking growth that I also pass down to my existing students. I am experienced with both classical & improvisational playing, but classical is my specialty.
My teaching philosophy rests in inspiring self-imposed motivation and excellence standards. As an educator, I lead my classroom energy as a safe leisure space children come to after other demanding responsibilities, as music is art, and leisure is one function or art. I also make classes simulate dopamine-rewarding systems that modern games/internet entertainment give humans (just a lot more postponed as classical training requires effort), after all, it’s good to have hobbies that build character and resilience.

- Classical technique focus, extremely detail-oriented in building good fundamental technique (sight-reading, finger technique, posture, musicality). I want them to be able to learn a song without a teacher, not a teacher to hold their hand every time they learn something new.
- I occasionally mix-in chords, improvs, to develop children’s musicality and adapt to modern music (but only to develop musicality as it doesn’t train finger technique much). Classical builds good technique, and it stretches the limits of human’s acoustic music-making abilities, a beautiful art form, but it’s also important to be relevant from time to time.
- I prioritise children’s good relationship with music first, discipline is a result, and not just exam numbers. Great exam results come naturally as the product of care and self-motivation with good support from teacher with care for standards. Music should nourish the soul.
- I’m experienced with students who are almost quitting music due to busy schedules, but eventually learn to see it as a hobby leisure activity that’s nice to pick up upon studying with me. Make lessons engaging, like they are attending a fun event weekly.
